My Harbour Barra nemesis, February , is no more. Took Mitch from NT Elite Cycles out on the harbour today to try and chase the numerous but elusive dirty water, jelly prawn munching, lure refusing Harbour Barra. The run out was pretty quiet, as was the bottom of the tide. We waited patiently for the run in tide and as the cleaner water and colour change started to move in with the tide, I picked up a couple of Smilers on a Gulp and then a nice Ock-Ock on the Gulp as well.
We were chucking hard bodies and plastics around and turning the water to foam. Saw one very big Baz roll on the surface as he inhaled a mullet and saw a few more boofs. I thought it was going to be a typical harbour Feb for me, Barra all around me but not “in” the boat.
Mitch ended up hooking a nice Baz right at the boat, as he was about to lift the lure out of the water. It almost took the rod out of his hand as it munched his gold bomber. It went 57cm and was a really nice specimen of a “Harbour Racing Barra”, I was stoked to see one in the boat, but anxious as all hell.
I changed over to a D.O.A. Prawn that I had removed the weight from and had it on a 30lb leader, downsized so I could at least hook one of the buggers. Had it on my 1-3kg Strudwick Sicstick and my little 2000 Stradic. On about my second or third cast it got inhaled in the shallow water and a sizeable Barra came out of the water. It fought very well on the light gear and I think it was the most nervous I have been with a fish. I was worried about the light leader and the bugger jumped quite a few times, despite the low rod. Mitch did a great job on the net and I was absolutely stoked when we got it in the boat. Finally broke my Feb Harbour Barra duck after quite a few years. Have now taken Baz out of the harbour in every month of the year (not the same year though). It went 68cm and I got my harbour Valentine and she smells like fish.
Off to Shady tomorrow, so hopefully it will be good. Great day today though.

MCB,
the harbour has got me worked out, it knows I am a sucker for our Harbour Racing Barra and my Beloved Tuna. It is a great fishery and I always learn on the water when I am out there. We are very fortunate to have such a fishery on our front doorstep. I hope that we can continue to look after it.
Bushie,
Mitch will be back on the water with a vengeance pretty soon, his new boat is not long for being on the water.
