Tell us a camping story. Let us guess? You left the cooking oil and bog roll at home ...

Marrakai track Culvert Fishing 09 March '08

Post by tatie »

Well, this was supposed to be a fishing trip but because we didnt actually catch anything well just write it off as a Sunday Drive...

Well, after failing yesterday i took Unseen down to the Marrakai Track to check out the culverts and see how much water was pumping into the Adelaide and Mary river systems.

Set off just after lunch and took the Arnem Highway option with a quick drop in at the Windows on the wetlands culvert for a look-see. Lots of action there with plenty of tarpon, and fishermen!

Set off again, this time pulling off before the barkhut at the Marrakai Rd and burning down there. Sign said rd was impassable at the Margaret river. Road was fairly good, with the odd wash out, and plenty of low lying sections with water over them, but nothing more than 50cm up the tyres...

checked a couple of creeks as we went passing plenty of other people with the same idea, all heading for the Margaret Creek. Only the roport of one fish on the way...

anyways, as we got past the Adelaide station and back into free land things were getting wetter and wetter... we rounded the bend and all of a sudden the road dissapeared into a massive floodplain (which now looking at google earth i have figured out is the feeder to Kaisons Creek on the Adelaide just past Goat Island) with 6 cars sitting at the edge all watching a late model hilux being towed out of the water! for a second i thought i was going to have to get the winch out and save them myself (i having the only winch that wasnt under 6 feet of water, but another hilux managed to snatch him out with the assitance of a couple of people weighing down the tray to stop it floating away... ill let the pictures talk for themselves.

i think the old rule of "Walking is Safer" should have applied here as i was told that somebody was waist deep attempting to check it when the hilux owned thought he would test it from behind the wheel... would have been a long tow home for him!

in the end we didnt get to the Margaret, but made for a good day out of the house!

more water over the road... ok, now we were just trying to salvage a failed fishing trip into a proper wheelin story! 8)

on that first culvert there were scales there and reports of the guy that was there as we got there, said he dropped a "decent" fish about 20mins prior.

I got 1 swipe from the far eddy that forms there .. was a good drive none the less, the swipe was on a pink popper. Threw bozos (green) gold bombers and fizzers and still nothing ..
