Just booked tickets to queenstown in july for an anual snowboarding trip i do, am loooking into doing some fly fishing around the lakes of queenstown, apparently the rivers are closed that time of the year, and im likely turn the same color as my jeans from freezing tempertures, but has any one ever done any fishing in NZ, during winter and caught fish, thinking of hiring a helo and going wide to some good spots. IS IT WORTH IT???? this time of the year

I'm sure the chopper would provide a superb experience, but we just drove from Queenstown a little way up the road to Glenorchy and we could see trout under the road bridge.
I walked from the bridge up the river and had a few casts and there were fish, a magic spot.
Better off spending money on a guide I reckon, that big lake at Queenstown has salmon and monster trout in it but you have to know where to look.

I’ve fished a few times in winter but only on the Tongariro River in the North Island and I can tell you it is well worth it.
I have also fished around Queenstown a bit as well but only in spring, I have always found the best areas to be close by Arrowtown, which is not far from Queenstown.
As Matt says suss out a guide before parting with your hard earned cabbage!

I went there last year and my missus was feeding ducks with bread when a brown appeared and started to eat the bread too, so out went a size 1 hook baited with bread and after five minutes of trying very hard not to catch a duck the trout took the bait- not conventional I know but at least I caught a NZ trout!
